United Food Bank’s Food Drive Friday Launches ‘Summer of a Million Meals’ Campaign
United Food Bank kicked off its ‘Summer of a Million Meals’ campaign with a successful Food Drive Friday! This grand event, held from 7 AM to 7 PM on May 17th, brought the community together to support those in need during the sweltering summer months. Raising more than $35,000, this Summer of a Million Meals has started off strong in the effort to raise over one million meals, equivalent to $200,000, by the end of July.
The event was graced by special guests, including Gello from the radio show “Gello and The Gello Show”, Arizona Cardinals’ Big Red, and Kelvin Beachum, an NFL player known for his community involvement. Their presence added a touch of celebrity to the day and helped draw more attention to the cause.
Sally Harrison, President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, was also in attendance, showcasing the strong support from local business leaders. One of the most inspiring moments came from 13-year-old Dylan Pfiefer, who has made a name for himself by organizing food drives. Dylan’s donation was a testament to the power of youth activism in addressing food insecurity.
The event also saw remarkable contributions from various organizations and individuals committed to combating hunger. The United Dairymen of Arizona made a substantial donation of milk and cheese, ensuring that families receive nutritious dairy products. WM stepped in with a generous $3,000 match contribution in the morning, while Fry’s, Law Tigers, Norris Air, and the Girl Scouts also made significant donations to bolster the campaign.
Amazon demonstrated their commitment to the cause by pledging a $10,000 match, doubling the impact of donations made during the drive. Papa John’s and Mint Dispensary further supported the effort, with Mint Dispensary contributing $2,500. Red Bird added to the bounty by donating 100 turkeys, ensuring families could enjoy hearty meals.
In a heartwarming surprise, State Farm and the Arizona Cardinals made a $10,000 donation, underscoring their dedication to supporting local communities. Their unexpected contribution was a highlight of the day, energizing volunteers and donors alike.
Employees from Amazon, Meineke, State Farm, Cardinals, and Just In Time Moving & Storage also rolled up their sleeves, volunteering their time to build 2,550 emergency food bags during the event with United Food Bank’s volunteer leaders. Their efforts exemplified the spirit of community service that defines Food Drive Friday.
United Food Bank’s CEO Jason Reed expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received. “Food Drive Friday was a fantastic start to our ‘Summer of a Million Meals’ campaign. The community’s generosity has been truly inspiring, and these contributions will go a long way in helping us meet our goal of providing one million meals this summer.”
The success of Food Drive Friday sets a hopeful tone for the rest of the campaign, which will continue throughout the summer. United Food Bank encourages everyone to participate, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry during the challenging summer months.
