>>>Cory now has moved to Williams Field High School. They are also collecting food to help the hungry this Thanksgiving. >> and hey, Cor! >> Good morning. You are right, it’s Williams Field High School. It’s home of the Blackhawks now. We aren’t at the high school but we are helping to stuff a bus full of food that these high school kids have collected. Look at it. The thing is jammed. We will find out how all of this happened and where all this food is going to end up…
>>>Cory is with mesa high school students stuffing a school bus with thanksgiving donations. Do you see that thing? >> that’s a stuffed bus. Sometimes they say stuffed bus but it’s not quite so stuffed. That one is stuffed. >> they mean it. >> yeah. They are totally serious about it. This bus — i don’t know how it got so jammed but look at their faces. These are the kids responsible for what happened today. And we are glad that they are out early. These are the Blackhawks of Williams Field High School. WFHS. And the bus is stuffed, but we got — you can’t really deliver things in a bus. Am i right? You are on the board of united food bank and thank you for joining us this year. What’s about to happen? Mayhem will ensue but what’s our plan. >> we have 100 students here and they will unload this bus and spent their time this November stuffing the bus and now it’s time to unload the food that’s in there. So we can provide healthy meals for people in need in the east valley. >> get to it. Show us your stuff. And we will see how — i don’t know how long this will take. They look like they are ready to go. Give me an idea where this food is going to end up? And who is it going to help. >> the united food bank serves half a million people in five counties in eastern Arizona including Maricopa County. This food is going to go to kids in need, veterans in need. Seniors in need. Homeless folks, anybody that goes to a place of food pantry& where they can get united food bank services will receive this food. >> and how long has united food bank been at it. >> we have been doing stuff the bus with Williams Field since 2011. And it’s wonderful. They raised $4,300 this time and enough to provide 22,000 meals to people in need in the community. And it’s a great thing and these kids really get to learn a lot about getting back to the community and we think that helps make them better and they get something out of it, too. >> children of these kids will be stuffing the bus, too. >> and we hope so and you never know when it can be you when it’s in need and understanding that early in life is a great thing for kids and we were happy to partner with Williams Field and it’s an exciting event and we appreciate their help. >> and just so I’m clear and maybe i missed this. Are they bringing in food or are they collecting money and both. >> and they are raising money at football games and collecting food at their events throughout November. And then getting donations from their churches, their other activity groups and anywhere and everywhere that they can obtain a donation and then they bring it to us. >> they have the yin and yang of canned goods here. We go from great northern beans — we go from great northern beans, awful. To the pinnacle of canned pastas. Spaghetti. >> wait a second are you serious? Do you know those white beans have the most protein of any bean — I got a daughter now who is a pescatarian which is a big pain in the rear end when I try to get her protein, look at the white beans. >> and that leaves the SpaghettiOs for you. >> when I get three-year-old to eat something and not starve herself to death this is. Shove these into a toddler. >> she gets hungry enough. Going to happen. >> so hard core. >> just like any pet, troy. >> that’s right. >> any mammal gets hungry enough, even great northern beans …
>>> well, Cory is with mesa high school students and they have done an incredible job. They are stuffing a school bus with thanksgiving donations for valley families. >> and hey, Cor! >> good morning. And, boy, we are looking at the team from united food bank here in mesa. And you cannot believe how much food is coming in to united food bank today. All courtesy of the kids over at Williams Field High School in Gilbert. And Mary is with us this morning and thanks for sharing these kids for us. Thanks for sharing your vision. You started all of this a few years ago. What got you going? You could have done anything. Why this? >> it was actually eight years ago and I was kind of concerned at the large community service projects or the lack thereof. So I met with Josh Crosby the director of transportation and he has a — and I’m looking for community service food drive. So we came up with stuff the bus and you can see it’s been a great success. The kids are happy to be a part of it. It’s a wonderful experience. >> hardly room for a kids backpack. It really is jammed with food from top to bottom. It really must whip up the enthusiasm at your school. >> absolutely. Blackhawks dominate and this is another reason why they do. >> wow. Thanks for sharing them all with us. And how is the period when this is all happening? >> it’s a one month. It’s four weeks. >> gotcha. And I know you are not only collecting food at the school but you have gone about getting donations and so forth in other ways. How does that work? >> yes, we take cash donations. We did a minute of sharing at a local football game. And at a recent football game. And we collected over $600 for that. Basha’s customers were wonderful for us. And we are really thrilled. >> thank you to everybody who helped. Hey, guys, come here and gather around your big check. It’s not just food but cash as well. Thanks to the Blackhawks of Williams Field High School…
