This month we shine the spotlight on an agency that has been operating for nearly twenty years. The Gold Canyon United Methodist Church Food Bank (GCUMC) was started by Colette Bos, who started the food bank utilizing a closet in an old church building. Having grown tremendously, GCUMC has just added to the Church Master Plan new food bank facilities which will more than double its storage and service capabilities.
Church members are the major contributors with donations coming in every day of the year. The Gold Canyon Arts Council helps with a special concert series for which the price is a food bank donation. Bashas’ of Gold Canyon always steps in when GCUMC inventory is low, and local church and businesses also do their part, especially Canyon Vistas Church in Gold Canyon.
Led by Jeff Downing and assisted by Dan Gray, Rush Tucker, and all of its dedicated volunteers, CGUMC offers not only emergency food to those in need (including special foods for those on a diabetic or gluten-free diet), but hygiene items, diaper and baby items, and pet food as well. Each child who visits the food bank also gets a special treat—a book of his or her choice!
