Struggle to Strength: Amy’s Resilience in the Face of Adversity
70% of Americans are one paycheck away from a different life. That means all it takes is one unfortunate incident, or one large bill, before having to choose between basic necessities. For Amy, that life has become a reality that she fights every day to change. Amy has been unhoused for a little more than two years, after 15 years of living in Arizona. She moved here from Florida when she was just 19 years old.
“17 years I was married, had a house, a car, everything. I wake up the next day and it’s all gone,” she shares. “I’m realizing my biases when I was younger, how I never thought I would live this life. But now that I do, I’ve lived both sides, and there’s so much more understanding.” Amy’s journey intertwines with the unwavering support of one of United Food Bank’s partner agencies, the Genesis Project. Amidst the challenges of homelessness, Amy finds hope through the services provided by these invaluable organizations.
Amy’s path to Genesis was marked by struggles, but her determination to improve her life situation shines through. Whether it’s a six-mile walk, a bike ride, or a scooter journey, she makes her way to Genesis almost every day. She not only benefits from its offerings but also gives back, donating items when she can and spreading the word to others in need.
“I’ve become a street mom to a couple of the young ones out here, and even if I meet them out there, I’ll bring them here,” she says. “ It’s a good place, and they’re always trying to keep you in high spirits. I love the fact that they come out and interact with everybody. Reese and Trinity open their arms to so many people. They’re all amazing here. This is our community.”
The Genesis Project serves as more than just a service provider; it’s a community that offers Amy a sense of belonging and support. Through her interactions with staff and fellow community members, Amy finds encouragement and inspiration to continue moving forward. The kindness and compassion she receives fuel her hope for a brighter future. “This place gives you all the options.,” she says about the Genesis Project.
Despite the challenges she faces, Amy remains steadfast in her determination to overcome them. Through the assistance of the Genesis Project and United Food Bank, she finds the support and resources necessary to take steps toward a better tomorrow. Amy’s gratitude for their help is palpable, as she speaks of the impact they’ve had on her journey. “Having this facility, I know it’s helped a lot of people and it continues to help me today. I’m going to turn things around in my life, but I will never forget them. I will always come back to help until I can’t do it anymore. Once I’m back on my feet, I’m not going to forget anybody that’s out here. This is something I would like to start up because I know there are not a lot of pantries like this in any state,” Amy says. For her, the Genesis Project isn’t just a place; it’s a symbol of compassion and solidarity in a world often marked by indifference.
As Amy navigates through life’s uncertainties, she holds onto the simple joys – spending time with loved ones, engaging in creative pursuits, and cherishing the moments of respite provided by the Genesis Project. “Right now, I enjoy rock hunting. Earlier this morning, that’s what I was doing, and I came back with two jackets full. My kids love it when I get to visit them. I have five, and thankfully they are all well taken care of right now.”
