More Than a Pantry: CAHRA’s Holistic Approach to Community Well-Being
Standing strong on the border of Eloy, Arizona, the efforts of the Community Action Human Resources Agency, or CAHRA, keep their community informed as they provide a variety of programs and resources to their residents. At the forefront of their community outreach is the Santa Cruz Valley Food Pantry, a vital resource that not only addresses the immediate needs of local residents but also fosters a sense of community and support.
Their drive-through food distribution ensures a seamless and efficient process for families in need, primarily serving large households of four or more people. The backbone of the food pantry is its incredible team of volunteers, with many serving for more than 2 years. One volunteer has even been volunteering for 12 years straight!
Perfecto, the Food Pantry Manager, started his professional career with CAHRA after volunteering for quite some time. “I’ve been volunteering here for 16 years but I’ve just recently started working for CAHRA about 2 and a half years ago. With this job, I feel like helping people and making an impact on our community is well worth it.” His journey from a young volunteer to a dedicated member of CAHRA reflects the sense of community and family fostered within the organization.
A significant aspect of the Santa Cruz Valley Food Pantry’s outreach is the distribution of senior food boxes. “The demand for these boxes is so high that lines stretch twice around the block on distribution days,” shares Perfecto. This emphasizes the importance of addressing the unique needs of senior citizens within the community.
Neighbors, like Abe, not only benefit from the food pantry but also embody the spirit of community by sharing excess food with each other. Abe, who has been coming to the Santa Cruz Valley Food Pantry for five years, has recently faced personal tragedies but remains connected to the pantry and extends his generosity to his community by sharing the food he receives.
CAHRA goes beyond food assistance by also offering housing programs and various nutrition assistance initiatives. The organization’s commitment to the holistic well-being of the community is reflected in the diverse range of services provided.
The Santa Cruz Valley Food Pantry, under the umbrella of CAHRA, stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. The dedication of volunteers, the impact on individuals like Abe and Perfecto, and the shared sentiment of neighbors exemplify the positive ripple effect that community support can create. In Eloy, Arizona, CAHRA is not just an organization; it is a lifeline, fostering unity, compassion, and resilience within the Santa Cruz Valley community.
